The Grayson County High School Volleyball team won the 12th District Championship Tuesday.

The Lady Cougars brought home some silverware this week.

The Grayson County High School Volleyball team won the 12th District Championship after beating rivals Edmonson County 3-0 (25-22, 25-10, 25-15) in the semifinal Monday night and followed it up by stopping tournament host Trinity (Whitesville) 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-15, 25-15) in the final Tuesday.

Grayson took a step back this year during the regular season by finishing at 14-12, a five-win difference from going 19-6 in 2018, but they got the job done when it mattered most. Last season, the Lady Cougars fell to Trinity 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-15, 25-15) in the final but this year they got their revenge on Trinity's home floor.

It started Monday night with a dominating performance by the Lady Cougars. They edged out the first set by three points and then turned on the engines to outscore the Lady Cats 50-25 in the final two sets, cruising into the championship match.

Ella Robinson was the main source of offense Monday, finishing with 16 kills and three blocks while junior Kenzie Skaggs backed her up with nine kills, three digs, two blocks, and two aces. Bailey Richardson provided the defense with 13 digs and Alexis Hart continued being the team's leading setter ending with 36 assists during the win.

The victory Monday made a perfect 3-0 season for Grayson versus their closest rival and extended their winning streak over them to six, spanning two years since their last defeat.

The Lady Cougars carried that momentum into the final Tuesday. Playing Trinity on their home floor, Grayson took the opening set 25-20 to settle the opposing crowd right from the start. The Lady Raiders responded in the second by just edging out Grayson 25-23 but then the Lady Cougars found a second gear.

Grayson closed out the match, winning both the third and the fourth by a ten-point margin to pick up the trophy and stun the home crowd.

Robinson again came up big in the final, leading the way with 26 kills, three digs and two aces while Hart continued being the provider setting 47 assists in the championship win.

Now up for Grayson is the 3rd Region Volleyball Tournament later this week. The Lady Cougars still have to wait for other district tournaments to wrap up to learn their opponent, but they know their ticket is punched for the big dance.
