OWENSBORO -- Breckinridge County scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to overcome a one-run deficit and defeat Grayson County, 7-6, in a back-and-forth contest in the opening round of the 3rd Region Baseball Tournament on Monday at Shifley Park's Jack Hicks Field.

Cole Tabor drove in two runs with a two-out single, and Trenton Brown scored moments later on a wild pitch to give Breck County (25-5) a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

"At this level, it's survive and advance, and we were able to win a close one," Fighting Tigers coach Jeremy Bennett said. "I'm just glad to see our guys fight. Once we went down there in the fifth, we could've folded and we didn't. We battled and fought back, and I was proud of their effort there."

Dain Hawkins finished 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for the Cougars (19-20), including an RBI that put Grayson County up 1-0 in the first. His two-run base hit in the fifth helped the Cougars plate four runs and claim a 5-4 advantage.

Grayson County also got a 2-for-3, three-run performance from Noah Bullock, whose score in the sixth brought the Cougars within one run before ultimately falling short. Damon Simon and Noah Brown chipped in two hits apiece, as well.

Kobe Poole went 2-for-4 and scored twice to pace Breckinridge County, while Isaac Seeger went 2-for-4 with a run.

Preston Cottrell earned the pitching win in relief, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts in the final 22/3 innings.
