Staff Report

A Leitchfield man was killed in a two-vehicle crash involving an East Grayson County Fire Department vehicle on Saturday morning.

At approximately 8:53 a.m. on Saturday, Kentucky State Police Post 4 received a call from the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office requesting the KSP investigate a fatal collision near 2166 Spurrier Rd. in Big Clifty.

Law enforcement's preliminary investigation revealed that 65-year-old Dale Darst, of Leitchfield, had been traveling north on Spurrier Road in a 1995 Dodge 1500 pickup belonging to the East Grayson County Fire Department when he crossed the center line and into the path of a 1999 Ford Explorer, driven by 64-year-old Kenneth Spratt, also of Leitchfield, that was traveling southbound.

Darst was returning to the East Grayson County fire house after responding to another collision that had occurred earlier that morning, according to a press release from KSP Trooper Scotty Sharp.

According to Deputy Grayson County Coroner Larry Holeman, Spratt was pronounced deceased of multiple blunt force trauma at the scene at 9:11 a.m.

Darst was transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

The Clarkson Fire Department, Grayson County Road Department, and Grayson County EMS also assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by CIRT Team Reconstructionist Sgt. Scott Rafferty.
