A 2-year-old boy drowned at Rough River Dam State Resort Park on Saturday.

At around noon on Saturday, 2-year-old Andres Gomez, of Morgantown, Kentucky, slipped away from a gathering of around 40 people at the picnic shelter at Rough River Dam State Resort Park, according to Deputy Grayson County Coroner Larry Holeman.

His parents noticed he was missing around 12:30 p.m., and family members immediately began searching for him, Holeman said.

The child was found unresponsive in the water of the swimming area at Rough River Lake, and initial reports indicate that he was not wearing a life jacket at the time he was found, according to Kevin Kelly, a spokesman for the investigating Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife.

Family members estimated the child had been missing for around 20 minutes before they noticed he was gone, Kelly said.

In addition to the Department of Fish & Wildlife, Rough River park rangers, the Falls of Rough Volunteer Fire Department, and Grayson County EMS also responded to the scene.

Holeman said CPR was performed on Gomez, and he was transported from the scene by Grayson County EMS to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead after 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing by the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife.
