Staff Report

Nearly 30 calls of thefts from vehicles in Leitchfield were reported to police this week.

On Wednesday at approximately 3:06 a.m., the Leitchfield Police Department began receiving reports of numerous thefts from unlocked vehicles at multiple locations in the northern Leitchfield area.

According to a press release from the LPD, the areas include Chester Street, Orchard Street, Cave Mill Road, Kegley Drive, Asbury Street, North Broadway, Sunset Drive, Angela Way, and Parkview Drive, with similar incidents reported outside the city limits on Butler Road and Carter Road.

"A total of nearly 30 calls were received throughout the day as residents noticed their vehicles had been gone through," said LPD Detective Kevin Smith in the release.

The LPD also received a report that a male subject had attempted to make entry into a residence in Leitchfield through an open window.

According to the press release, items stolen from the unlocked vehicles included mostly money, loose change, two purses and a wallet that had been left in the vehicles. One handgun was also taken from a vehicle.

Smith said at least three subjects are involved in the thefts, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about these crimes is encouraged to contact the Leitchfield Police Department at 270-259-3850.

The LPD wished to use this opportunity to raise awareness among residents to always make sure their vehicles are locked and to never leave items of value inside the vehicle if possible; if doing so is not possible, make sure valuables are stored out of sight.

"Please make sure to never leave any items of value in plain view inside your vehicle and always make sure the doors are locked," Smith said. "No items were taken from any vehicle that was locked."
