Participants in last Saturday's Kentucky Pro Bass Warrior fishing tournament at the Peter Cave boat ramp gather for a group photo.

Kentucky Pro Bass Warriors, a non-profit group for veterans by veterans, traveled to Rough River Lake this past Saturday to provide a relaxing day on the water for veterans and active duty military suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

Founded in 2012 by Kaoru O'Bryan, the group takes numerous fishing trips between the months of March-November in an effort to alleviate the daily stresses of veterans.

According to Kentucky Pro Bass Warriors board member Terry Douglas, these trips are offered to veterans at no cost, and lunch, as well as fishing supplies, are provided to all participants. The boats used by the veterans are supplied by civilians.

The purpose, according to Douglas, is to get them away from their daily routine.

"Hopefully they'll forget for a day all the pain and agony they have to deal with every day," Douglas said.

To add a little more fun to the events, the Kentucky Pro Bass Warriors award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes, as well as a plaque for the biggest fish caught during the day. And, to ensure that the group continues to grow, the warriors challenge every first time fisher to bring a friend the next time they participate.

"Our motto is 'Helping wounded soldiers recover...one fish at a time," Douglas said.

Saturday's tournament saw record participation at 43, and the Kentucky Pro Bass Warriors wish to thank the local community for supporting the event, especially Peter Cave General Store, which provided a free breakfast for all participants, and the marina for waiving its fee.

"It was a nice day out," said O'Bryan. "Everybody caught fish. That's what it's all about. Getting them on the water for a relaxing day...If they catch fish, that's a bonus."

The winners of Saturday's tournament were as follows:

1st Place and Big Fish: Carter Price and Steve Robinson

2nd Place: Randy Richardson and Don Gibson

3rd Place: AJ Huddleston and Wayne Langham

The Kentucky Pro Bass Warriors' next tournament will be held on Sept. 21 at the Moutardier boat ramp at Nolin Lake. The deadline to register for this event will be Sept. 14.
