Staff Report

The Kentucky State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Thursday in Breckinridge County and resulted in the death of a Leitchfield man.

At approximately 5:46 p.m. on Thursday, KSP Post 4 was contacted by the Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Office requesting assistance with a possibly barricaded subject at 181 Ballman Ln. in Breckinridge County.

The preliminary investigation identified the subject as 52-year-old Kevin D. Jenkins, of Leitchfield, who was reported to be intoxicated and had made statements concerning harming himself and others, according to a KSP news release.

When KSP Troopers and BCSO deputies arrived, they were unsuccessful in making contact with Jenkins to come out of the residence.

Troopers and deputies then entered the residence and located Jenkins with a firearm; he refused verbal commands to put the weapon down and then pointed the firearm at the officers, at which time one trooper fired his service weapon, striking Jenkins, the release states.

Jenkins was transported by Breckinridge County Emergency Management to Ben Johnson Elementary School to be airlifted by helicopter for treatment.

Due to Jenkins' critical condition, the flight was diverted to Breckinridge Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Jenkins' body was taken to the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The trooper involved in the incident has been placed on paid administrative leave for two weeks.

The KSP Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation.
