A Leitchfield man has been arrested and charged in relation to two recent burglaries in Clarkson.

On Jan. 29, Clarkson Police Chief Buck Meredith was notified of a shoplifter at L&L Sales, located at 102 Peonia Rd. in Clarkson. Upon Meredith's arrival, 52-year-old Hubert Mercer, of Leitchfield, was arrested and charged with theft by unlawful taking under $500 (shoplifting) and possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), according to a press release.

Police then searched Mercer's residence near the 4000 block of Grayson Springs Road and found items that had been reported stolen from a storage building in Clarkson, the release states.

Meredith said the Clarkson Police Department has also been investigating the storage building break-in, which occurred during the early morning hours of Jan. 23, and, on Feb. 2, Mercer was served an arrest warrant for theft by unlawful taking over $500 in relation to this incident.

Possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and theft by unlawful taking over $500 are both Class D felonies, and these charges are scheduled to be presented to the Grayson County Grand Jury by Meredith. Theft by unlawful taking under $500 (shoplifting) is a Class A misdemeanor.
