The Leitchfield Dairy Queen handed out free ice cream cones and accepted donations for the benefit of Norton Children's Hospital on Wednesday.

The event was part of Dairy Queen's company-wide annual celebration of the first day of spring and initiative to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, a non-profit organization that raises funds for children's hospitals, medical research, and community awareness of children's health issues.

Dairy Queen Manager Martina Reddish said the local restaurant took in $607 in donations at the register on Wednesday, and that amount is expected to rise after change in the coin donation box has been tallied.

Additionally, all donations accepted by the Leitchfield Dairy Queen will go locally to benefit Children's Miracle Network member hospital Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, according to Reddish.

To assist with the event, Dairy Queen enlisted several community members, including Clarkson Police Chief Buck Meredith, to help hand out free ice cream cones to customers.

"I am very happy and very honored to have had the opportunity to serve free ice cream cones and help our local Dairy Queen crew raise money," Meredith said. "I enjoy talking and working with the public, so I always look forward to helping in any public fundraiser I'm invited to. Serving ice cream was a first for me - I just hope it's not my last."

Dairy Queen continually accepts donations for the benefit of the Children's Miracle Network year-around. For more information about Dairy Queen's partnership with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, visit dairyqueencorp.childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org/.
