An 18-year-old Millwood man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his grandmother and slashing her throat Friday morning.

At approximately 3:40 a.m. on Friday, Grayson County Central Dispatch received a call from a man stating that his grandmother was bleeding from the chest and back and appeared to have been stabbed, according to Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins.

The Grayson County Sheriff's Office and Leitchfield Police Department arrived at the residence near the 200 block of Pleasant View Road in Millwood and discovered an elderly female lying in the driveway.

Grayson County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Fred Norder’s investigation revealed that the person who made the 9-1-1 call was the victim’s grandson, 18-year-old Douglas R. Barton, of Millwood.

"It also revealed that Barton was the one that caused her to be lying in the driveway after he became enraged and attacked her from behind, stabbing her multiple times in the back," Chaffins said.

Barton then allegedly "grabbed her by the head and slashed her throat and appeared to have stabbed her in the trachea," according to Chaffins.

Afterward, Barton left her in the driveway and called 9-1-1.

The victim suffered multiple injuries that caused her to lose a large amount of blood, as well as sustain a collapsed lung and damaged trachea.

"The female was transported by Grayson County EMS to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center and later to the University of Louisville Hospital where she was listed in critical condition," said Chaffins. "Currently, she is in critical but stable condition with other surgeries ahead of her."

Police took Barton into custody, and he was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center on the charges of attempted murder and tampering with physical evidence, according to Chaffins.

Norder’s investigation is ongoing.
