Grayson County’s tennis teams traveled to Elizabethtown on Tuesday and came home with a split of the two, 5-point matches.
The Lady Cougars fell to 1-1 on the season with an 0-5 loss to the Lady Panthers, while the Cougars moved to 2-2 with a 5-0 shutout.
Head coach Sherry Vincent said playing 5-point matches against the tradition-rich Panthers put a lot of pressure on her teams at all positions.
“Responding to and handling that pressure is key,” Vincent said. “It’s always a good test for this early in the season.”
Vincent said her girls’ squad was just outplayed.
“Our lack of court awareness and our unwillingness to make our presence known on the court (hurt),” she said. “We have a lot of work to do and much of that work must be a do-it-yourself project.”
Vincent said that E’town’s men’s squad is very young in the singles area, with most of their experience coming with the doubles teams.
“The Cougars’ doubles play brought intensity, backed up with covering the court well,” she said. “The men’s’squad still has a great deal of improvement (to make). Both squads are inconsistent. The pre-season is about learning and growing.”
