The Cougar varsity invaded the aerie of the Ohio County Eagles last Friday in Hartford and came away clawed in a 63-40 loss.

The JV squad got 30 points and eight rebounds from freshman Colton Williams to salvage part of the night with a 61-50 win over the Eagles.

VARSITY GAME

The Cougars led just once in this game, 6-5 following 1-of-2 free throws by Lane Rackley with 3:42 left in the first quarter. The Eagles then scored 11 straight, and finished the period on a 14-1 run to lead by 12 points, 19-7 heading into the second quarter and they never let up.

The Eagles then outscored the Cougars 19-8 in the second period and led by 23 points, 38-15 at the half. When the Eagles held the Cougars to just four third-quarter points, they were able to extend their lead to 35 points, 54-19 at the start of the fourth quarter.

With mostly JV players on the floor in the fourth quarter, the Cougars were able to outscore the home team 21-9 to make the final score a bit more palatable.

The Eagles put three players into double figures, with Preston Lambrich leading all scorers with 18 points. Trevor Lewis scored 15 points and Trent Hall added 11 for the Eagles.

Rance Whobrey led the Cougars with 13 points, all of them coming in the fourth quarter. Braxton Williams scored nine points and led the Cougars with six rebounds and five assists. Talon Gary also had nine points for the Cougars and added three rebounds.

Bret Johnston scored four points, Gage Akridge had three, and Tanner Tyra had two to complete the scoring.

JV GAME

The Cougars started quickly, getting three-pointers from Logan Ramsey and Gage Akridge to race to an 11-2 lead with 2:12 left in the first quarter. Grayson County still led by six, 14-8 at the end of the period.

An 8-2 run at the start of the second quarter increased their lead to 12 points, 22-10 with 1:40 left in the second period, but they led by just seven, 24-17 at the half.

The Eagles outscored the Cougars 15-8 at the start of the third quarter to tie things 32-32 with 1:27 left in the period. The Cougars responded by scoring the last six points of the third quarter, and the first two of the fourth to take an eight-point lead, 40-32 with 5:49 left to play in the game.

Trace Young stopped the Cougar run with a basket at the 5:35 mark to cut the lead back to six, 40-34, but the Eagles would get no closer. An 8-1 Cougar run, capped by Wyatt Skaggs’ three pointer with 4:03 left, pushed the lead back up to 13 points, 48-35, and the Eagles were never closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Williams was the only player in double figures for either team. He scored 19 of his 30 points in the second half. Cole Akridge scored eight points and added four rebounds. Skaggs finished with seven points, while Tyra had five. Tyra also led the team with four assists.

Ramsey and Zac Williams both finished with four points and Ramsey added six rebounds. Gage Akridge closed out the Cougar scoring with three points and added four rebounds.
