The Grayson County JV girls put three players into double-figure scoring Monday night at McLean County to win their season-opener 39-28.
Freshman Jodi Decker sliced and diced the McLean defense for 12 points, and junior Katie Hayes and sophomore Sloane Embry had 10 apiece to lead the way for the Lady Cougars. Hayes hit three shots from behind the arc for nine of her points.
Decker started the scoring on the night, going to the hoop for a lay-in at the 5:22 mark to put the Lady Cougars in front 2-0. McLean’s Johnna Humphrey buried a three at the 4:41 mark to put her team on top 3-2. That would turn out to be McLean County’s only lead of the night.
The Lady Cougars scored the next seven points to lead 9-3 with 2:00 left in the first period. They led by seven points, 12-5 heading into the second quarter.
Hayes hit her first three of the night at the 3:56 mark to give her team a 10-point lead, 17-7, but McLean County finished the half by outscoring the Lady Cougars 5-1 to cut the lead to six points, 18-12 at the break.
Humphrey hit a 10-footer with 1:27 left in the third period to make it a five-point game, 21-16, but the Lady Cougars scored seven points in the last 23 seconds to push the lead back to 12 points, 28-16 heading into the fourth quarter.
Decker scored on a lay-in with 23 seconds left before Raven Shelton stole the ball. Shelton then hit Embry for a lay-in with 10 seconds left and the Lady Cougars led 25-16. Following another McLean turnover, Breanna Minton hit Hayes on an inbounds play and Hayes buried another three with :01.5 left and the Lady Cougars suddenly led 28-16 as the fourth quarter began.
Grayson County opened the final period on a 7-1 run, including threes from Hayes and Embry to push the lead up to 17 points, 35-18 with 4:15 left to play. McLean County was never closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Decker added two rebounds and three steals to her totals for the night. Hayes added three boards and led the team with five steals. Embry led the team with three assists and added two rebounds and two steals.
Kiara Brooks hit one shot from behind the arc for her three points, while Cortney Tomes and Grace White closed out the scoring with two points each. White led the Lady Cougars on the boards with six rebounds.
