It is time again for the annual Rex Hurt Memorial NolinFest hosted by Friends of Nolin Lake at the Moutardier Recreation Area in Nolin Lake State Park.

The event, which is happening this coming Saturday, August 4, will include free fireworks and concerts along with a bevy of reasonably-priced family-friendly activities such as carnival rides, pony rides and a petting zoo, and cornhole.

The music begins at 4:30 with Tommy Brown & Country Line Grass performing bluegrass music, and later, Andy and the Rockers, an area band which melds county, blues and rock will take over.

The fireworks are scheduled to begin at dark, and are a great treat, according to Friends of Nolin Lake President Glenna Black, who said the show-stealing fireworks are their ‘water cakes,’ which are shot into the lake and then “dance upward from the water.”

In addition to about 2,000 people on the ground, Black said she expects hundreds of boats to serve as floating front-row seats to the firework show.

Once the fireworks have reached their finale, the music will begin again and carnival rides will also continue.

Attendees are encouraged to bring along folding chairs or blankets to lay out to enjoy the music and fireworks.

Also, bring along a towel and some water shoes if you wish to swim at the rocky beach, Black said.

Throughout the day, there will also be product and food vendors and some booths set up by the Friends of Nolin and Fish and Wildlife where kids can learn how to fish or learn about water safety.

There will also be a cornhole tournament which begins at 6 p.m., sponsored by the Knights of Colombus. Cash prizes will be awarded in the blind draw competition. Black explained that this type of competition is a little more fair because pros and amateurs alike can enter, and will be assigned a random partner to play with.

A Classic Car Show will also be held in the overflow parking lot before the picnic shelter. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and judging begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Traffic and parking for all of the events will be directed by boy scout and adventure crew volunteers.

“Watch them, they’ll be directing traffic where to go,” Black said, adding, “just be conscientious that our boy scouts and venture crew are going to be leading them and guiding them where to go.”

Black also recommends that festival-goers bring along a flashlight to aid in finding their way back to their vehicles at the end of the night.

Black said that the festival is mainly about enjoying the. “We really do try to make it a down home, family oriented type of event,” she said.

For further information about the festival, you can visit Friends of Nolin Lake’s website at www.friendsofnolinlake.org and check out the ‘Events & Activities’ tab or give them a call at 270-272-8003.

Their website can also link visitors to Andy and the Rockers’ own site, where you can get a taste of the music to be offered at Nolin Fest.
