As part of Safe Boating Week, Corps of Engineers rangers and Fish and Wildlife officers at Rough River will be doing courtesy boat safety checks. Both agencies have set up the following schedule for the inspections, which emphasize wearing life jackets on the water:

Saturday, May 20 -- North Fork Ramp from 9 to 10 a.m.; Axtel Ramp from 10 to 11 a.m.

Laurel Branch Ramp from 10 to 11 a.m. Rangers will also be at Cave Creek and the State Park ramps.

Sunday, May 21 -- Axtel Marina from 1 to 3 p.m.; Rough River State Park Marina from 1 to 3 p.m.; Peter Cave Ramp from 10 to 11 a.m.; Eveleigh Ramp from 1 to 2 p.m.; Axtel Ramp from 1 to 2 p.m.; North Fork Ramp from 1 to 2 p.m.

Wednesday, May 24 -- Axtel Marina from 10 to 11 a.m., and Bill's Marina from 10 to 11 a.m.

Friday, May 26 -- Axtel Beach Water Safety from 10 to 11 a.m., and North Fork Beach Water Safety from 4 to 5 p.m.

Rangers will be talking about new Coast Guard rules that require children under age 13 and aboard recreational vessels wear personal flotation devices (life jackets). In the U.S. 105 children under 13 died in the water from 1995 to 1996. The Coast Guard said 66 of those deaths were from drowning, and the life jacket rule is to cut down on these fatalities.
