The Lady Cougar basketball team surged its way into the final of the girls’ 3rd Region Basketball Tournament with a thrilling, 72-63 win over Breckinridge County (23-11) last Friday evening at the Sportscenter in Owensboro.

Breck’s fantastic point guard, Lily Grimes led all scorers in the game with 31 points, but it was not enough to offset the Lady Cougars putting five players into double figure scoring.

Senior Grace White had probably her biggest game of the year, leading the Lady Cougars (21-10) with 19 points and making it another double-double night with 15 rebounds. She also led the team with four assists.

Hannah Saltsman came up big again for Grayson County, scoring 16 points and adding six rebounds. Mackenzie Edwards came off the bench to score 13 huge points for the Lady Cougars and she added eight boards. Senior Shannon Smith hit three three-pointers to finish with 11 points, and senior Allie Horton had 10 points and three assists.

Grayson County raced out to an early seven-point advantage, 11-4, but the Lady Tigers scored seven unanswered points, capped off by a Grimes three-pointer, and the game was tied 11-11 with 1:04 left in the period. Mackenzie Edwards beat the buzzer with a lay-in with two seconds left that put Grayson County back in front by two, 13-11 at the start of the second period.

The Lady Cougars still led by two points, 17-15 before Grimes hit back-to-back-lay-ins to give her team its first lead of the night, 19-17 at the 5:32 mark of the second quarter. The Lady Cougars then got a pair of three-pointers from Smith in a 9-5 run that saw them retake a two-point advantage, 26-24 at the half.

Breck’s Sarah Shrewsberry canned a three-ball to open the scoring in the second half putting the Lady Tigers back in front one last time, 28-27 at the 6:38 mark. Grayson County then scored 11 unanswered points to go up by 10 points, 37-27 with 3:07 left in the period. The Lady Cougars led by eight points, 46-38 heading into the final period of play.

Saltsman scored on back-to-back lay-ins opening the fourth quarter, but Shrewsberry answered that with back-to-back threes to cut the Breck deficit to just six points, 50-44, but that would be as close as the Lady Tigers would be the rest of the way.

Shrewsberry joined Grimes in double figures with 12 points, and both players would later be named to the 3rd Region All-Tournament Team.

Brandi Minton scored two points for the Lady Cougars, while Kenzie Renfrow had one to complete the Lady Cougar scoring.
