The Lady Cougar soccer team kick-started its new season with a one-sided, 9-2 victory at Barren County in the first scrimmage game of the season last Saturday morning.

Juniors Kayden Sutherland and Keisha Dennis had big games for Grayson County. Sutherland scored four times for the Lady Cougars and assisted on four other goals. Dennis finished the day with three goals. The other two goals came from first-year freshman Laura Dennis and senior Lauren Bennett.

Grayson County wasted little time in taking charge of this game, scoring three times in the game’s first five minutes. After putting a shot just over the top of the Barren County cross-bar in the first minute, Sutherland took a ball deep into Barren territory in the second minute. She shot from just inside the left sideline on a very difficult angle, but the ball slid past Trojanette goalie Savannah Green and into the far corner of the net to make it 1-0.

Two minutes later, Dennis took a pass from Sutherland near the penalty area, dribbled it in and beat Green to make it 2-0.

Less than a minute later, Sutherland took the ball away from a Barren County ball-handler about 15 yards out from the Trojanette goal and drilled another shot into the net to make it 3-0.

The score stayed that way until the 21st minute, when a Grayson County free kick went to Sutherland about 30 yards out from the Barren goal. Sutherland took a couple of dribbles forward to set up her shot, then blasted a ball past Green to make it 4-0.

In the 25th minute, Vincent stepped up to score her first goal as a Lady Cougar soccer player. When she found herself all alone down the right side, she took the ball deep into Trojanette territory. Still ahead of the Barren defenders, she angled in toward the goal and took a shot from about 15 yards out that beat Green to make it 5-0.

Dennis scored her second goal of the game in the 27th minute when she took a beautiful crossing pass from Sutherland about 10 yards in front of the goal and put the ball into an unguarded net to make it 6-0.

With less than a minute to play in the first half, Sutherland was on the board again, taking a throw-in from senior Bailey Decker and taking the ball in on goal to make it 7-0 at half-time.

Grayson County had three good chances in the first five minutes of the second half, but was thwarted each time. But in the 45th minute they got on the board once again. Sutherland won a ball near the mid-field stripe and moved in toward the Barren goal. She sent a pass forward toward Dennis, who beat her defender to the ball then took it in for her third goal of the day to make it 8-0.

Just a minute later, the Lady Cougars connected for the final time. Sutherland won a ball to the left of the Trojanette goal and sent a high pass into the box. Bennett got to the ball right in front of the goal, settled it and sent it over the outstretched arms of Green to make it 9-0.

Head coach Rusty Ray emptied his bench at that point and the Lady Cougars played the last 24 minutes with subs. That allowed the Trojanettes to score their only goals of the game.

With less than four minutes remaining, the Trojanettes had a shot clang off the right upright. A few seconds later, Barren’s Maddie Green won a ball in front of the Lady Cougar goal and shot it past goalie Haley Stevenson to make it 9-1. Green scored again with just seconds remaining on the clock to make the final score 9-2.

The Lady Cougars will play their final scrimmage game on Wednesday at North Hardin, then will open the regular season on Monday, Aug. 15 at Marion County. That game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
