The golf season got under way Thursday afternoon when the Cougars played host to Central Hardin at The Falls course, in Falls of Rough.
The golf program is undergoing a change as Tony Embry takes over as head coach and Danny Clark joins him as an assistant. Embry was the Cougar soccer coach last season, while Clark has been coaching at GCHS for more than 20 years.
Both the boys and girls teams will be young this year, with only two seniors on the roster, Josiah Dennis for the Cougars, and Leslie Swafford for the Lady Cougars.
The Cougars will have three sophomores, Nathan Shelton, Lincoln Nichols and Nathan Keys, and a freshman, Alex Scott, who has transferred in from Louisville Butler.
Four middle schoolers round out the Cougars, 8th-graders Grant Manion, Jacob Dennis and Jaxon Higdon, and 7th-grader Keegan Sharp.
For the Lady Cougars junior Rachel Shelton returns as the team’s number-one. Sophomore Karson Clemons, freshman Abigail Garrett, and 7th-grader Sophia Elmore round out the young Lady Cougar squad.
Central Hardin took both matches Thursday, though no scores for the Bruins were available at press time on Friday.
Shelton led the Lady Cougars with a good round of 40. Swafford fired a 44, Clemons shot a 53 and Elmore closed out the scoring rounds with a 67, making the team total 204. Garrett shot a non-scoring round of 71.
Nichols led the Cougars with a 41, while Dennis shot 45. Manion tallied a 49, and Keys closed out the scoring with a 51 for a team total of 186.
Non-scoring rounds were put in by Higdon, who finished with a 60, and Scott with a 67.
The Golf teams will be back in action on Tuesday at The Falls when they play host to Ohio County.
