Two goals in the second half against visiting Bullitt Central allowed the Cougar soccer team to salvage a 5-5 tie in the opening scrimmage game of the season.
First-year Cougar coach Kenny Fukuhara saw his team quickly fall behind 2-0 in the early going. But the Cougars came back, getting three straight goals from senior Carson Zurmehly to go in front 3-2.
Central again took charge, scoring twice more to grab a 5-3 halftime lead. Grayson County then got goals from Cody Watson and Chase Minton to tie the score 5-5 and neither team could put the ball in the net the rest of the way.
Central got on the board first in the fourth minute of play. Austin Mason brought the ball down the right side and took a long, high shot from near the sideline. Cougar goalie Jack Davis was set up near the right upright, and as he faded back on the ball was unable to get a hand to it and the ball settled into the goal to make it 1-0.
A couple of minutes later, Davis came out of the net in an attempt to clear the ball away, but had his kick glance off of Central’s Aiden Terry and into the net to make it 2-0.
Grayson County answered quickly, with Zurmehly taking a pass from Connor Schultz in the ninth minute and putting the ball past Central goalie Dylan Mudd to make it 2-1.
Grayson County tied things 2-2 in the 16th minute. Schultz sent a ball ahead from near midfield which got behind the Central defense. Zurmehly outraced the defenders to get to the ball before he put a shot past Mudd for the equalizing goal.
Just a couple of minutes later, Zurmehly scored again to give the Cougars their first lead of the game. Senior Caleb Powell set up the goal with a centering pass to Zurmehly, who put the ball on goal. It appeared Mudd would be able to stop the shot, but he was unable to handle it, and the Cougars took the lead, 3-2.
Central tied the score again, 3-3 in the 22nd minute, when Davis came out for a ball behind his defense. Alex Roberts beat him to the ball and was able to put it past Davis. With no one in front of him, Roberts put the ball into the empty net.
Central regained the lead in the 30th minute when Chase Lovell took a beautiful crossing pass and beat Davis to make it 4-3. Roberts scored his second goal of the game in the 36th minute when he got behind the Cougar defense and beat Davis one-on-one to make it 5-3, and that’s how the first half ended.
Less than five minutes into the second half Grayson County got on the board again to make it 5-4. Zurmehly gained possession of the ball just past midfield and took the ball toward the goal. After dribbling through several defenders, Zurmehly sent a centering pass just in front of the goal to Watson, who put the ball past Mudd.
In the 57th minute, Mudd was injured and had to leave the game. A minute later his replacement, Colton Metcalfe, had a shot from sophomore Chase Minton glance off his hands and go into the goal to tie things at 5-5.
That was all the scoring, though Central had two very good opportunities go awry. In the 62nd minute Central was pressuring the goal. With Davis out of goal, a backward shot looped toward the empty net, but senior Amos Goodman was able to head the ball away.
In the 76th minute, Central had a number of opportunities right in front of the Cougar goal, but the defenders were able to keep the ball out of the net long enough for Davis to fall on the loose ball to stop the threat.
The Cougars will play another scrimmage game on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at Warren East. Their first regular season game will be Tuesday, Aug. 16 at Larue County.
