Grayson County High School senior, Bailey Martin, set a new school record in the pole vault during last week’s Region 2 Track and Field Championships, which were held at North Hardin High School.

Martin cleared the bar at 9-feet, 6-inches to finish second overall and secure a place in the State Track & Field Championships which will be held this Saturday in Lexington. The old school record was 9-feet even, set back in 2007 by Desiree Hutchinson.

Eighth-grader, Laura Vincent, finished third in the event with a jump of 8-feet, 6-inches and will also go to the state competition. This marks the second straight state appearance for Vincent.

Others heading to state this year will be sophomores Jordan Stallings and Jarrett Crawford, and freshman Hailey Stallings.

Crawford and Jordan Stallings both qualified for state in the pole vault. Stallings finished second with a jump of 12-feet even, while Crawford cleared 11-feet even for third place.

Stallings just missed setting a school record in the 300-meter hurdles. Her time of :49.47 was good enough for fourth place and a trip to state. The school record for the event is :48.4 seconds, set back in 1989.

“It’s very likely that Hailey will break the record while she is in high school,” said track head coach, Matt Hayes.

The middle school team also had great success and will have several competitors at the state middle school championships.

Eighth-grader Ethan Pierce had earlier broken the school pole vault record with a leap of 9-feet, 6-inches. He later set another record when he cleared the bar at 10-feet even during the Grayson County Pole Vault Only event on May 11.

Along with Pierce and Vincent, Caitlyn Woosley, Dylan Zabel, Graci Keown, Madyson Hazelwood and Braelyn Hayes will take part in the KTCCCA state middle school competition.

Pierce and Vincent will both compete in the pole vault, and Pierce will also compete in the high jump. Keown will compete in the 100-meter hurdles, Woosley will compete in the long jump, Hazelwood will compete in the 400-meters, Hayes will throw the shot and discus and Zabel will run in the 300-meter hurdles.
