Lady Cougars take two in Owensboro

The Lady Cougar basketball team picked up a pair of one-sided wins Thursday in summer play at Owensboro High School.

In the morning opener, the Lady Cougars put three players into double-figure scoring as they ran away from the Greenwood Gators 58-36.

Later that afternoon, after leading by as many as 27 points in the second half, the Lady Cougars allowed Union County to make a comeback before finally holding off the Bravettes for a 13-point, 49-36 win.


The game stayed close in the early stages of the first half, but two Lady Cougar runs gave them a commanding half-time lead and they never looked back.

A Gator three-pointer at the 13;35 mark of the first half gave them their only lead of the game, 11-10. Grayson County answered with eight straight points, capped off by a Sarah Pierce rebound basket with 10:42 left, to take a seven-point lead, 18-11.

The Gators cut it back to five, 20-15 with 8:53 left, but the Lady Cougars then reeled off 10 straight points, including two Shannon Smith three-pointers, to lead by 15, 30-15 at the 2:37 mark. Grayson County led by 17 points, 34-17 at the half.

The Gators were never closer than 17 points in the second half, and the Lady Cougars scored the final five points of the game to win by 22, 58-36.

Grace White led the Lady Cougars with 16 points and added a team-high eight rebounds. Sarah Pierce scored 12 points and added three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Allie Horton was the third Lady Cougar in double figures, finishing with 10 points and a team-high three steals.

Smith finished with eight points, while Hannah Saltsman and Breana Minton had six apiece.


Grayson County led by two points, 6-4 at the 13:52 mark when they put together a 14-0 run that put them in charge of the game. Pierce and Snith had back-to-back threes during the run.

The Bravettes cut the lead to 15 points, 23-8 with 5:52 left, but threes from Brandi Minton and Smith increased it to 21 points, 29-8 with 2:08 left.

Union County scored on a lay-up with five seconds left, but White beat the buzzer at the other end with a three that gave the Lady Cougars a 22-point lead, 32-10 at the half.

A Pierce rebound basket at the 15:24 mark of the second half gave the Lady Cougars their largest lead of the game, 27 points at 42-15.

But with bench players in the game for Grayson County, the Bravettes went on a 17-2 run, including 13 straight, to cut the margin to just 12 points, 44-32 with 8:11 remaining.Head coach Daniel Pharris brought his starters back at that point and they were able to stave off the rally and record the win.

White again led the Lady Cougars with 15 points and added eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Smith was the only other Lady Cougar in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Pierce had seven points, while Horton and Saltsman had six each. Saltsman also had six rebounds. Brandi Minton finished with three points, while big sister Breana had two to complete the scoring.
