After being in front for the whole game, the Lady Cougars gave up the lead with a little over two minutes remaining against Breckinridge County Monday at Cougar Gym, but they were able to regain that lead and go on to a 53-50 win over the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Cougars led by as many as nine points in the first half, then built a 12-point lead in the third period before the Lady Tigers, behind their superb point guard, Lily Grimes, came back to take their only lead of the night with 2:34 left to play. The Lady Cougars then took back the lead and held off the visitors for the win.
Sarah Pierce’s three-pointer at the 2:46 mark of the first period gave the Lady Cougars an eight-point lead, 13-5 They led by seven points, 16-9 heading into the second quarter.
Grace White opened the scoring in the second period with a lay-in at the 7:35 mark to give Grayson County its largest lead of the first half, nine points at 18-9.
The Lady Cougars still led by eight points, 21-13, when the Lady Tigers put together an 8-0 run that tied things at 21-21 with 2:55 left in the first half.
Grayson County responded with a 9-2 run closing out the period that saw them leading by seven points, 30-23 at the half.
When Pierce opened the third quarter with a three-pointer and White hit a lay-in at the 5:28 mark, the Lady Cougars held their largest lead of the night, 12 points at 35-23.
White picked up her third foul with 3:22 left in the third quarter and took a spot on the bench. With the Lady Cougars without their leader, the Lady Tigers were able to close out the period on an 8-2 run that closed the gap to six points, 37-31 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Grimes took over at the start of the final period of play. A lay-in was followed by two foul shots as White picked up her fourth foul. Grimes hit just 1-of-2 at the line to cut the lead to three points, 37-34 with 7:00 remaining.
Following a Lady Cougar turnover, Grimes buried a three at the 6:31 mark and suddenly the Lady Cougar lead was gone, tied up at 37-37.
Back-to-back baskets by Hannah Saltsman and White put Grayson County back in front by four points, 41-37 with 5:54 left.
Breck tied things again 43-43 on a basket by Sarah Shrewsberry with 4:57 left, but Allie Horton put Grayson back on top with a lay-in at 4:40.
Grimes followed with 1-of-2 at the line to make it a one-point game, 45-44 with 3:59 left, but White answered with a 10-footer at 3:09 to give the Lady Cougars a three-point edge, 47-44.
Shrewsberry than scored back-to-back basket to put her team in front for the first time all night, 48-47 with 2:34 left to play. That would be their only lead of the night.
White hit 1-of-2 at the line to tie it at 48-48, then she hit another short jumper with 1:03 left to make it 50-48. Breck missed a shot at their end before Horton went to the line in the bonus with 26.7 seconds left. She hit the first, but missed the second, keeping it at a one-possession game.
The Lady Tigers ran a lot of time off the clock before Grimes hit a lay-in with 6.1 seconds left. Breck put Horton at the line in the bonus with 3.5 seconds showing on the clock and the junior guard hit both shots to make it 53-50. Breck was unable to get a shot off in time and the Lady Cougars had the hard-fought win.
Grimes led the Lady Tigers with 22 points and Shrewsberry added 14.
White led all scorers with 23 points and made it a double-double night with 10 rebounds. Pierce hit three three-pointers in the game and finished with 11 points. Horton was the third Lady Cougar in double figures with 10 points and she added three rebounds and three steals. Saltsman completed the scoring with nine points.
Shannon Smith and Breana Minton did not score in the game, but each added four rebounds.
