Trailing by nine points with a little over a minute left in regulation, the Lady Cougars came back to force overtime before falling 56-52 to the Barren County Trojanettes in the fifth-place game of the Caveland Classic last Tuesday in Brownsville.
Grayson County trailed 46-37 with 1:19 left to play, but closed out regulation on a 12-3 run to tie things 49-49 with 10 seconds left. Barren County had a chance at the winning basket in the closing seconds, but missed a shot.
The Lady Cougars held the lead for most of the first period, but Barren’s Deanie Pedigo hit two free throws with 54 seconds remaining that tied the score at 8-8. Grace White then beat the buzzer with a short jumper that put Grayson County back in front 10-8 at the start of the second quarter.
Grayson County led by four points, 18-14 at the 2:39 mark, but a three-point play and a lay-in by Barren’s Elizabeth Bertram gave the Trojanettes their first lead of the afternoon, 19-18 with 1:39 left in the half.
Lady Cougar senior Sarah Pierce hit a three-pointer to put the Lady Cougars back on top 21-19 at 1:18, but Bertram closed out the half with a buzzer-beating three to give the Trojanettes a 22-21 advantage heading into the intermission.
The Lady Cougars could tally only three points in the third quarter, but held the Trojanettes to six and trailed by four points, 28-24 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Grayson County battled back to grab a one-point lead, 30-29 at the 6:23 mark, but Barren County scored six straight to go in front by five, 35-30 with 4:38 left. Later, a 7-2 Barren County run put them in front by seven points, 42-35 with 2:24 remaining.
When Pedigo hit two free throws with 1:19 left to play, the Trojanettes were ahead by nine points, 46-37 and seemed to have the game in hand. But the Lady Cougars were not done yet.
White hit 1-of-2 at the line and followed that up with a three-pointer with 59 seconds left to cut the deficit to five points, 46-41.
Kennedy Logsdon went to the line for Barren for two shots for with 46.7 left and missed both. But the Lady Cougars were whistled for a lane violation and Logsdon hit the next shot to make it 47-41.
White scored again with 38.2 seconds left, but Madison Hume countered with two free throws with 30.2 seconds left to make it 49-43. Hannah Saltsman responded with a three-pointer and Grayson County called timeout with 21.9 seconds left trailing by three, 49-46.
A jump ball and a Barren County foul was called with 18.8 seconds left and with the arrow in Grayson County’s favor, Allie Horton went to the line for two shots. Horton made the first, but missed the second making it a two-point game, 49-47.
The Trojanettes called a timeout with 10.2 seconds left. Back on the floor, they were unable to get the ball inbounds within five seconds, and the Lady Cougars were awarded possession. White was then fouled and hit both shots to send the game into overtime, tied at 49-49.
Saltsman hit 1-of-2 free throws to put Grayson County in front 50-49 at the 3:33 mark, but the Trojanettes scored five unanswered points to take command 54-50 with 39 seconds left and they held on to take the win.
Pedigo led the Trojanettes with 14 points, while Bertram and Taylor Davis scored 11 each.
White led all scorers with 17 points and she made it a double-double by pulling down 10 rebounds. Saltsman finished with 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Pierce reached double figures with 11 points, Horton finished with eight points and Shannon Smith had two to complete the scoring.
Pedigo, Hume amd White were all named to the All-Tournament team.
