With senior Sarah Pierce having a monster first half, the Lady Cougars grabbed an early lead and did not let go Saturday night in Morgantown as they crushed the Butler County Lady Bears 65-40 to improve to 6-8 on the year.
Pierce seemingly could not miss in the first half as she hit six three-pointers and scored 20 of her game-high 23 points to spearhead the Lady Cougar onslaught. She ran into foul trouble in the second half and sat out most of the third quarter.
The lead changed hands three times before a Grace White three-pointer put the Lady Cougars in front 8-6 at the 4:38 mark. White’s shot was the start of an 11-0 Lady Cougar run that saw them, take a 10-point lead, 16-6 with 3:10 left in the first period. Grayson County would never trail again.
The Lady Cougars still led by 10 points, 24-14 when Pierce hit back-to-back threes to increase the lead to 16 points, 30-14 at the 6:15 mark.
Butler’s Chloe Flener scored with 6:00 left to cut the lead to 14 points, but the Lady Cougars reeled off 10 unanswered points, including threes from White and Pierce, to up the lead to 24 points, 40-16 with 3:45 left in the first half. Grayson County led by 19 points, 42-33 at the break.
Butler County opened the second half by scoring the first five points to cut their deficit to 14 points, 42-28 at the 7:05 mark, but they would never be closer. An 8-2 Grayson County run increased the lead to 20 points, 50-30 with 2:27 left in the period. The Lady Cougars led by 18 points, 50-32 heading into the fourth quarter.\
A White free throw with 1:38 left to play gave the Lady Cougars their largest lead of the night, 27 points at 64-37.
Flener led the Lady Bears with 17 points. In addition to her 23 points, Pierce added five rebounds.
White closed out her night with 17 points, five rebounds and a team-high four steals. Hannah Saltsman joined Pierce and White in double figures with 10 points and she led the team on the glass with six rebounds. Allie Horton scored six points and added four rebounds.
Shannon Smith and Brandi Minton both finished with three points, Mackenzie Edwards had two and Kenzie Renfrow completed the scoring with one point.
