In a district showdown at the Cougar Soccer Stadium on Monday, Meade County’s Lady Waves showed they were the top dog in the district with a convincing, 7-0 beat-down of the Lady Cougars.
In the early JV game, the Lady Waves showed they will probably remain the team to beat in the district for years to come as they humbled the young Lady Cougars by a mercy-rule score of 10-0. Grayson County never got a shot on goal and the game was halted eight minutes into the second half when the Lady Waves scored their 10th goal.
A sign of things to come throughout the varsity game, the Lady Waves scored their first goal a little over thirty seconds into the game when Shelbie Williams got to a loose ball in front of the Lady Cougar goal and shot it into the net to make it 1-0.
Eight minutes later Williams was the beneficiary of a beautiful crossing pass from Abby Nelson as the Lady Waves went up 2-0.
Following a Cougar foul in the 15th minute, the Lady Waves were awarded a free kick from about 25 yards in front of the Lady Cougar goal. Kourtnee Hersey took the kick and sent a looping ball toward the Lady Cougar goal which just sailed over the hands of Grayson County keeper Gabby Priddy to make it 3-0.
The Lady Waves had the ball in the Grayson County end for most of the first half and the Lady Cougars never got a shot on goal. The closest they came was a free kick in the 29th minute. Kayden Sutherland took the kick from about 30 yards out but it sailed high over the top of the goal.
As they did at the start of the game, the Lady Waves scored inside the first minute of play in the second half, with Nelson putting the ball in following a terrific crossing pass from Madison Reff to make it 4-0.
In the 55th minute, Reff was on the receiving end of another fine cross from Devon English and put the ball past Priddy to make it 5-0.
The Lady Cougars were threatening the Meade County goal in the 71st minute when the Lady Waves gained control of the ball and started a counter-attack up the right side. Nelson took the ball in unassisted from near mid-field and scored her second goal of the night to make it 6-0.
The Lady Waves scored their final goal of the night when Dori Emig, who had started the game in goal but later shifted to a wing position, scored unassisted to make it 7-0.
In the JV contest, the Lady Waves’ Kendall Wingler scored three times and Brayden Board and Abigail Sussman had two goals apiece as Meade County totally dominated the game from start to finish.
The Lady Cougars dropped to 8-5 on the season with the loss while Meade improved to 4-4-1.
