Playing against district rival Breckinridge County for the third time this season, the Lady Cougar soccer team made it three straight shutout victories on Thursday with a 3-0 victory at home.
In the late game, the Lady Cougar JV squad got the only goal of the game from seventh-grader Gillian Johnston and the young Lady Cougars recorded their first win of the season, 1-0.
Grayson County got on the board early in the varsity contest. The Lady Tigers were pressuring the Grayson County goal in the first four minutes of action, but were held out.
The Lady Cougars then began a counter-attack, with sophomore Keisha Dennis bringing the ball up the left side in a rush. Her centering pass to sophomore teammate Kayden Sutherland was right on the money and Sutherland sent a left-footer whizzing past Breck goalie Abbey McCellon to make it 1-0 in the fifth minute of action.
Sutherland had a great scoring opportunity in the 13th minute as she got behind the Tiger defense and brought the ball in unmarked. But this time McCellon stopped Sutherland’s point-blank shot to keep it at 1-0.
McCellon had another fine stop on Sutherland in the 25th minute, rejecting a hard Sutherland blast from the left side of the net. The half ended with the Lady Cougars still holding on to their 1-0 lead.
Grayson County had several good opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half, including a shot from the right side by junior mid-fielder Lauren Bennett in the 55th minute, and a wide-open shot from Dennis in the 61st minute.
Grayson County finally got another ball into the nets in the 62nd minute when Dennis sent a beautiful crossing pass from the right wing to Sutherland, who booted it home to make it 2-0, and the Lady Cougars could breathe a little easier.
Grayson County scored its final goal in the 65th minute, when McCellon dove out in front of her net to stop a ball headed for the net. But when she could not control the ball, Sutherland, who was stationed at the left post, got a foot to the ball before McCellon could gain control and sent it into the back of the goal to make it 3-0.
The Lady Cougars will play a make-up game at home against Meade County on Monday, Sept. 21. The JV game will begin at 5 p.m., with the varsity contest scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m.
