Two sophomores scored all five goals on Wednesday as the Lady Cougar soccer team defeated the visiting Marion County Knights 5-0 at the Cougar Soccer Field.

Ashton McMonigal scored twice, while Kayden Sutherland scored three times, including a penalty kick, as Grayson County improved to 2-1 on the early season.

The Lady Cougars dominated action from the start, keeping the ball in the Knight’s end of the field for much of the first half.

McMonigal was in the right place at the right time to get the first goal in the seventh minute of the game. Junior Bailey Decker brought the ball, in on goal on the right side and unleashed a shot from about 10 yards out. The ball deflected to the left off a Marion defender right to McMonigal who put the ball past keeper Abby Turner to make it 1-0.

Keeping the pressure on in the Knight’s end, Grayson County was awarded a corner kick in the 12th minute. Sutherland took the kick and sent a low shot toward the goal, right along the end line. Turner got a hand on the ball, but could not control it and it slid past her and into the goal to make it 2-0.

Grayson County made it 3-0 with a goal in the 19th minute. Sutherland brought the ball down along the left wing and sent a crossing pass into the middle. Decker controlled the ball and passed it to McMonigal, who beat Turner for the goal.

Grayson County added one more goal before the end of the first half. Attacking from the left wing, Sutherland sent a hard cross right in front of the Knight’s goal, where one of the defenders stuck up a hand and deflected the ball.

As the foul was in the penalty area, a penalty kick was awarded the the Lady Cougars. Sutherland took the kick and beat Turner to make it 4-0 at the half.

After controlling the ball in the Marion end for nearly the entire first half, the Lady Cougars were slow starting in the second. Both teams took turns controlling the ball at mid-field for the first 10 minutes.

But Grayson County began to assert itself again after that and soon was on the board again. In the 56th minute, Grayson County sent a ball toward goal. In a foot race to see who could get to the ball first, Sutherland outraced Turner and put a shot past the Marion keeper from about 15 yards out that settled into the net to make it 5-0.

The Lady Cougars had another golden opportunity to score again in the 66th minute when the Knights were again called for a handball in the penalty area. Junior Lauren Bennett took the penalty kick, but this time Turner was up to the task and turned Bennett aside.

Neither team would threaten after that and the Lady Cougars celebrated their win.

On Thursday, the Lady Cougars improved to 3-1 with another 5-0 victory, this time over visiting Monroe County. Sutherland scored four of the goals and McMonigal scored the fifth. Decker had an assist during the game as well.
