Two local men were airlifted to University Hospital in Louisville following a one-vehicle wreck on St. Paul Road Monday.

Immediately prior to the accident, Tony Dupin and Robert Grant were travelling toward Big Clifty on St. Paul Road at an extremely high rate of speed, according to witnesses at the scene.

An investigation is still underway, according to Grayson County Sheriff Rick Clemons, but it appears at this point that the four-door Ford involved in the wreck failed to negotiate a curve in the road properly because of the speed at which it was travelling.

After leaving the roadway, the vehicle overturned multiple times before coming to a rest on its wheels in a field approximately 100 feet from the roadway.

After speaking with eye-witnesses to the wreck, Clemons said that it appears Dupin was driving the four-door Ford, which sustained serious damage, and was ejected from the vehicle during the accident. Grant later told Clemons that he, too, was thrown from the vehicle and that neither he nor Dupin were wearing seatbelts at the time.

Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and Grayson County EMS responded to the accident, as well as East Grayson County and Clarkson Fire Departments and StatFlight.

Responders set up a make-shift landing location for the StatFlight helicopter at the intersection of St. Paul Road and Salt River Road, near the accident scene, and both Dupin and Grant were taken by ambulance to the pick-up location where they were transferred to the helicopter and taken to Louisville.

While GCSO officers were investigating the scene, multiple area residents offered information about the moments prior to the wreck. One resident told officers that the car appeared to be racing another vehicle that was also travelling at a very high speed.

Off-duty Kentucky State Police Trooper Seth Lee, who owns a house nearby, said that he and another man were crossing the street on foot when the Ford nearly hit them. Lee said that he thought the vehicle was travelling in excess of 100 miles per hour at the time and agreed with other witnesses who said there was another speeding vehicle behind it.

Clemons said that neither alcohol nor drugs are thought to be a factor at this time, but that the wreck seems to have resulted from driver inattention and a high rate of speed. The investigation will continue, he said.
