A swarm of bee-costumed dogs, one annoyed cat and a wreath-wearing goat were among the hopefuls for the title of top pet at the 2012 Honeyfest Amateur Pet Show.

But in the end Joey Brock’s dachshund, Penny, trotted off with the People’s Choice award at the Wednesday, Sept. 26, show. The little dog had spent most of the evening sporting a cheerleader’s outfit — complete with pom-pons on each paw — and a cowboy hat, charming the crowd.

For several categories, the judges had to go to the measuring tape when choosing a winner.

Nicole Webber’s Great Dane, Zeke, took the titles of biggest pet and longest tail.

She and her husband, Joey, have had the 140-pound Zeke for six years. They said he’s just a big lapdog who wants to cuddle up on the couch with his humans.

Zeke, who stands about 5 feet, 9 inches tall on his back legs, also made a good showing in the best tricks category, but lost out to MacKenzie Edwards’ 6-year-old miniature Shetland sheepdog, Mickey, whose repertoire included kenneling himself and putting his toys away, and Savanna York’s Yorkshire terrier Lexie.

Mickey, who took Best of Show in the 2011 contest, also won this year’s Best UK Wildcat fan costume title.

Madison Edwards, MacKenzie’s sister, won the smallest pet category with her hermit crab, Como. The crab was one of two entered in the show, and made a brief appearance again during the parade for the People’s Choice and Judge’s Sweetheart awards, carried in Madison’s hand.

Lake Hatfield and his Great Dane, Loki, captured the longest ears title based on the judge’s tape measure. Loki had given Zeke a run for his money in the largest pet and longest tail categories.

It was a tape measure finish in the shortest tail category, where Ivanna Coffey’s poodle/Yorkshire terrier mix and Lexi tied for first.
