Parkway accident claims one life
by Rebecca Morris

An early-morning accident Thursday, Oct. 4, claimed the life of a Leitchfield man and snarled traffic along the Western Kentucky Parkway for a couple of hours.

Curtis T. Hayes, 46, of Leitchfield was killed when the truck he was driving overturned about a mile east of Clarkson, according to Grayson County Sheriff’s Deputy Bryan Hammons.

The accident happened a little after 8 a.m. Hayes was headed west on the parkway, Hammons said, when according to a witness the truck began fishtailing.

The truck overturned after striking a guardrail, Hammons said, flippng an estimated three to four times.

Hayes was thrown some 60 feet from the wreckage, landing on the parkway. He was pronounced dead at the scene by county Deputy Coroner Larry Holeman.

The truck Hayes was driving was owned by Scott’s Asphalt of Leitchfield, Hammons said. It had a tank of asphalt sealant on the back, which spilled onto the road and into the ravine adjoining the parkway. The Environmental Protection Agency had to be called in to the clean up the spill, Hammons said.

The accident remained under investigation Thursday afternoon.
