Caneyville eyes new playground equipment
by Rebecca Morris
Reporter

New playground equipment could be in the works for the former Caneyville School property.

Earlier this year the city bought the former elementary and high school site, which sits near the center of downtown Caneyville, from the Grayson County School District. It plans to use the building as a community center.

Initially, commissioners had discussed applying for a $3,000 Kentucky League of Cities matching safety grant to help buy street signs. But a casual mention by city clerk Brenda Brown that the money could also be used for playground equipment sent them in a new direction.

After noting that some of the equipment still on the school property was is disrepair, they decided to apply for grant funding to help replace it, and approved spending up to $6,500 on the project. Mayor James Paul Embry appointed commissioners Connie Gootee and Debbie Embry to committee that will select the new pieces.

The commission also discussed progress on the wastewater treatment plant upgrades. One final piece of equipment, a bar screen, must still be installed, but the rest of the work is nearly complete.

The project included replacing the 30-plus year old plant’s mechanical equipment, replacing the aeration devices and adding screening to help remove some floating debris from the oxidation ditches.

Commissioners approved paying a final change order to contractors Scott and Ritter in the amount of $3,675. The firm had originally requested more than $11,000, but engineer Vern Shanklin got them to reduce the amount.

In other action, commissioners:

* Were sworn in for their new terms of office. All had run unopposed in the November election.

* Approved giving members of the city’s volunteer fire department $100 each toward offsetting their annual expenses, and approved Christmas bonuses of $350 each for city employees.

* Discussed needed roof repairs at the old school building. Commissioner Scott Majors will check on prices for the work.

* Discussed progress on the new ballfields. Due to the recent rains work on the fencing has stopped, but will resume when the ground dries.
