Lawler Elementary hosted the Regional Governor’s Cup for elementary school Academic Teams on Saturday, March 23.

According to Lawler Guidance Counselor and Academic Team Coach Becky Beeler, the Cup hosted teams from 14 elementary schools, of which five were from Grayson County, six were from Breckinridge County, and three were from Meade County.

Leitchfield Christian Academy (LCA) Academic Team Coach and 4th grade teacher JoNell Henderson said the Regional Governor’s Cup represents the highest event in which elementary school Academic Teams may compete.

Henderson said the Cup tests students on the core information they should know by the end of 5th grade and features written assessments in science, math, social studies, history, language arts, and arts & humanities.

Cindy Ford, who teaches 5th grade and also coaches the LCA Academic Team, said the Cup also features Future Problem Solving (FPS) challenges, in which teams of four are presented an issue and are given a set amount of time to formulate and present a resolution.

Ford said the Cup ends with a Quick Recall tournament, in which questions are presented to a team of four, and students buzz in with their answers.

Local winners included Jude Oller, of Lawler Elementary, who placed 5th in the Mathematics Assessment; Abigail Garrett, of Caneyville Elementary, who tied for 2nd place in the Social Studies Assessment and placed 3rd in the Language Arts Assessment; Grant Manion, of Clarkson Elementary, who placed 1st in the Science Assessment; Bailey Richardson, of Caneyville Elementary, who placed 2nd in Science and 1st in Language Arts; Chloe Paddack, of H.W. Wilkey Elementary, who placed 5th in Language Arts; Payton Abney, of Clarkson Elementary, who placed 1st in the Arts & Humanities Assessment; Rhiannon Wilson, of Caneyville Elementary, who placed 2nd in Arts & Humanities; and Gracie Franklin, of Clarkson Elementary, who placed 4th in Arts & Humanities.

In addition, Clarkson Elementary placed 1st in the FPS competition and 2nd overall in the final standings.

Caneyville Elementary placed 3rd overall in the final standings.
