A 21-year-old Leitchfield man is behind bars after reportedly wrecking a stolen vehicle on Friday morning and then leaving the scene of the accident.
Travis W. Block was arrested and charged with theft by deception of a vehicle valued under $10,000.
According to Sheriff Rick Clemons, Block will likely also be charged with leaving the scene of an accident and operating a motor vehicle on a suspended operator’s license.
Alcohol may also have been a factor in the incident, according to Trooper Braxton Allen, with Kentucky State Police.
Allen responded to a call on Mill Street on Friday morning, where David Veltman, of Leitchfield, reported that his vehicle, a 1994 Ford Mustang, had been stolen.
At the same time, in Caneyville, Clemons was responding to a a wreck on Highway 79 South after a passerby saw a man wreck a ‘94 Mustang and then proceed to get out of the car and walk north on Highway 79, away from the scene of the accident.
The vehicle, which sustained some damage, ran off of the roadway and knocked down a road sign before coming to a rest.
As they worked the two seperate cases, Braxton and Clemons quickly realized that the descriptions of the stolen vehicle and wrecked vehicle matched exactly, and the two departments collaborated on the incident.
Block, who was uninjured in the collision, was apprehended using the eye-witness information given to officers at the scene, and is currently being lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
