GCMS parents go back to school
by Brittany Wise

Sixth graders at Grayson County Middle School shared their classrooms on Wednesday with some very important visitors - their parents.

The school hosted a “Back to the Future” event, which allowed the students to bring their parents along for a class or for the entire school day. The parents seemed to be just as enthusiastic about experiencing school from their kids’ point of view as the students were about having some help around for their homework assignments.

Parents could be found listening to teacher’s instruction, looking intently over assignments, and laughing and joking in the cafeteria with their children and their friends.

“I think it’s great!” Kendra Kinchelle exclaimed as she was leaving the school after lunch. “The elementary schools should do it, too. I’d love to spend the day with my other kids like this.”

Sheryl Kelley, another parent, explained that her son, Wyatt, had missed some school due to medical issues, and this event gave her the opportunity to help her son “catch up on some school work.”

“It’s been great!” Kelley enthused as she and Wyatt snacked in the parent/student hospitality room set up by the Family Resource Center for the day.

According to Faye Critchelow, Director of the Family Resource Center, over a hundred parents typically attend the sixth-grade “Back to the Future” day, with about half of those staying for the entire school day.

Another such event will be held on October 18 for the seventh- and eighth-grade students at the middle school, and around 200 additional parents are expected to take part in the event.
