A Leitchfield man was lucky to walk away from a Thursday morning rollover collision which broke a utility pole and downed lines on Falls of Rough Road.

At just after 6 a.m. on Thursday, Deputy Adam Cottrell with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident scene around the 5000 block of Falls of Rough Road near the intersection with Shaw Wells Road.

The driver of the only vehicle involved, 47-year-old Guy M. Schmitzerle, of Fox Cliff Road in Leitchfield, told Cottrell that he was travelling southbound on his way to work when he reached for his coffee cup and ran off of the shoulder of the roadway.

According to Schmitzerle, he then struck an earth embankment and travelled south across the Shaw Wells Road intersection, striking a road sign and a utility pole before crossing back over Falls of Rough Road and coming to a rest facing north on the northbound shoulder of the roadway.

Schmitzerle told the officer that the vehicle had flipped numerous times, though he was not sure how many.

Schmitzerle, whose 2013 Chevrolet Cruze sustained very severe damage on all sides, according to the report, was uninjured and declined medical treatment.

Schmitzerle was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, and his airbag was deployed during the collision.

Tanner’s Towing, was called in to remove the vehicle.

Warren RECC was notified as a precautionary measure, but the lines across the roadway were determined to be utility lines rather than power lines. The pole and lines belonged to Windstream and have been repaired.

The Grayson County Road Department was also notified of the damage to the Shaw Wells Road sign.

In a separate accident on Monday night, October 15, a Caneyville man struck another utility pole on Beaver Dam Road.

The collision occurred just minutes before midnight, and the driver, 24-year-old Joseph B. Taylor, of Caneyville, told the responding officer that he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

According to Taylor’s testimony as recorded in the accident report filed with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department, Taylor’s 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, which had been travelling west on Beaver Dam Road approximately 10 miles west of the city of Leitchfield, crossed over the east-bound lane of traffic before leaving the roadway.

Taylor’s vehicle then struck a mailbox belonging to Russell Williams and then a utility pole before coming to a final rest facing west.

Taylor was uninjured, according to the report, and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. His airbag was deployed during the collision.

The truck sustained moderate damage and was removed by Terry’s Towing, of Caneyville.

Windstream was notified of the accident involving their utility pole.
