An overgrown yard on Hilltop Road that’s the subject of a new Facebook page could get a cleanup courtesy of the city of Leitchfield.
At a city council meeting Monday, Sept. 17, council member Steven Elder brought up the property, now featured on the Facebook page “The Infestation at 512 Hilltop Rd. Leitchfield, Ky.” He also supplied some photos of the property, downloaded from the Internet.
According to the Internet posting the garbage-filled house has been abandoned for some time, and is attracting bugs and pests like mice and rats. The yard is overgrown, the posting from a neighbor points out, and the house has been in a deteriorating condition for a decade or more.
The discussion went on to focus on other problem properties in the city and what could be done to clean them up. In the end, council members asked city attorney Ken Smart to start the work on declaring the Hilltop Road property and 604 Alexander Drive public nuisances so the city can go in and do some clean-up work.
In other action, the council:
*Unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance closing the “high” railroad crossing on Old Brandenburg Road. Area resident Ann Huff again protested the closing, saying improved warning signage could reduce the chances of vehicles getting stuck on the tracks.
A second, and final, reading of the ordinance will take place in early October. If it is approved as well, the crossing will be closed.
The vote comes about a month after state and federal officials, along with representatives of the railroad, approached the council to recommend the crossing be closed to vehicular traffic. Off and on since 2009, railroad representatives have asked that the crossing be closed due to its steep grade and poor visibility.
City officials had previously said they didn’t want to close the crossing without giving residents another way in
and out – possibly a widened Embry Brothers Drive. The city is seeking financial help from the state and federal governments, as well as the railroad, to help do that work.
* Learned the trusses for the new pavilion at Firefighter Park have been delivered and should be installed at some point this week.
