The City of Clarkson has been plagued by a series of vandalisms, the most significant of which included graffiti and the destruction of city property at the park, according to city officials.
The graffiti incident occurred on Friday night, June 22, and left a slew of symbols and words spray painted on the playground equipment and baseball field.
Much of the unsightly mess has been cleaned up by Grayson County Detention Center inmatesusing graffiti wash, though part of the playground equipment is still marred and will need to be repainted.
Phrases such as “ninja boys” and “black veil brides,” the second of which is a reference to a rock band, were written on city property as was profanity and a number of symbols.
Additionally, park signage was destroyed, the concession stand and soccer pavilions were broken into, a soft drink machine was demolished and items were stolen, officials said at a special-called city meeting at City Hall on Tuesday evening.
Clarkson Chief of Police Jeff King is working toward tracking down the vandals, and the city council is lending a hand by offering both a $500 reward and amnesty to anyone who will come forward with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the parties responsible for the park vandalism.
Anonymous tips are also welcomed.
“We need to put a stop to it,” said Mayor Bonnie Henderson, who explained that this incident is just the latest in a string of lesser vandalisms in the city and surrounding area.
Henderson said that the destruction has even extended to her own property, where a flag at the end of her driveway was burned recently.
Other incidents have included the destruction of various soft drink machines, broken flag poles and destroyed flags, and several occasions on which the locks at the soccer pavilion and concession stand at the park were broken and the buildings burglarized.
“We need to catch whoever is doing it and make an example of them,” said council member Bob Vincent.
The city council believes that the crimes have been committed by area youths, and are hoping that through the efforts of King and with the incentive of the reward, those responsible will be quickly identified and charged accordingly.
