As winter temperatures take hold of the area, the local Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is ready to take applications for the LIHEAP CRISIS Program.

The program, which is based in the Community Action Office located at 125 East Market Street in Leitchfield, will assist low-income families with their heating costs. While income and other guidelines apply, the program is set to help families who use propane, fuel oil, kerosene, wood, natural gas or electric heat to stay warm and safe this winter.

Assistance may be given up to the value of $400 for natural gas or electric users, or up to 200 gallons of propane, fuel oil or kerosene. Those using wood heat may apply for 2 cords of wood. The amount of assistance awarded varies according to need and income.

Families who wish to apply must be considered to be in a heating crisis, which LIHEAP defines as having received a past due or disconnect notice from their electric or natural gas company. For those who use propane, fuel oil, kerosene or wood, they must be within four days of running out of bulk fuel. Anyone who has received a formal eviction notice from their landlord for heating expenses included in their rent also meets the qualifications.

Additionally, the family income level must be at or below the 130 percent federal poverty level.

In order to apply, proof of income for the entire family for the previous month must be provided as well as proof of social security numbers and birthdates for household members and a past due/disconnect notice or bulk fuel statement. Applicants who wish to receive assistance with propane, fuel oil, kerosene or wood must also verify their physical address.

In order to apply for assistance, stop by the Community Action Office with the required information and expect a wait, as there are a large number of applicants.
