The Grayson County unit of Salvation Army members held a special called meeting on Wednesday February 11. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss ways to help the community deal with the problems of the aftermath of the recent Ice Storm.

Several areas of business were discussed in the meeting, including the assistance already provided by Divisional Salvation Army during the countywide emergency.

Dina Meyers of the Salvation Army Disaster Services for Kentucky-Tennessee units explained the process in which she dispatched the much-needed services of the Salvation Army.

On January 29, the Nashville Canteen Feeding Unit was deployed to the Grayson County Emergency Management and a supportive effort of the local Glasgow Salvation Army transported meals, blankets, water, and supplies to Grayson County. Throughout the following days the Salvation Army crews worked to make daily food and supply drops throughout the county.

Local Secretary/Treasurer Tracy Dennison reported to the members in attendance, that the local unit had provided gift cards to be utilized by the Emergency Operations Command for immediate relief to families that needed fuel for generators and kerosene for heaters in the first days of the ice storm.

The Grayson County unit also purchased 100 gallons of Kerosene and fuel containers for the EOC to use as well.

“There are still people, out in the county without power,” reported Dennison at the meeting, “Even though the worst of our situation is over,” she said, “we will continue to reach out to those who are shut in.”

The local unit will continue to work with Emergency Management to meet any met needs the citizens of the county may have as the recovery process continues.

Angie Jones, President of the local Salvation Army Unit reminded the members that, all Salvation Army Bell ringers who worked so hard during the Holiday Season need to be thanked for their hard work.

“The generosity of the county during the holiday season, helped to support the relief efforts during the ice storm.” The money collected from the red kettles during the holiday season stays in Grayson County and is used to support efforts by the local unit of Salvation Army.

The local unit will continue to work through the Emergency Operations Command Center to assist residents who have suffered losses due to the recent storm. Please call 259-0096 for assistance.
