The sights, sounds and tastes of the holidays will take over Caneyville and Leitchfield this weekend, as Caneyville and Leitchfield kick of their Christmas celebrations.
Caneyville will have its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, on the Bank of Caneyville property. Besides caroling and refreshments, children will be able to visit with Santa. Jeremy Atwood of New Harvest Baptist Church in Caneyville will give the devotional.
Leitchfield’s “Light Up Leitchfield” ceremony to ignite the displays in James D. Beville City Park will start at 5 p.m. Friday. The ceremony, organized by the city and Grayson County tourism commissions, will include refreshments, caroling by the Wilkey Elementary School chorus, and visits with Santa.
City tourism director Ilsa Johnson, one of the organizers, said more than 50 displays are expected in the park this year. They will remain lighted from dusk until 10 p.m. through December.
People attending Friday’s ceremony are asked to park at the softball field and catch a trolley up to the park pavilion. There will be parking closer to the pavilion for those with handicapped tags.
Leitchfield’s “Hometown Christmas” celebration kicks off Saturday morning with a 5K run and one-mile walk at Beville Park. Registration for the race, which is sponsored by Grayson County 4-H, begins at 7:15 a.m., with the race starting at 8 a.m. Awards will be given for the overall male and female runners and top finishers in each age group.
For those who prefer to get their exercise carrying shopping bags, the annual DECA craft bazaar is a must drop-by. Held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Centre on Main, it will feature several local and area merchants offering a variety of crafts and decorative items. Proceeds go toward DECA’s autism fundraising project.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Rocky-K Log Homes and Construction will host its “Cabin Christmas” open house and craft fair. Those attending can tour a log home, browse among craft offerings from several area sellers, and hear music from the Twin Lakes Dulcimer Club.
Everyone’s favorite old elf, Santa, and his ruby-nosed reindeer sidekick Rudolph will be at Whoop De Do Designs on Public Square from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parents can have their children’s holiday pictures taken by Flutter By Photography during those hours.
If your morning’s shopping has you dropping, the Leitchfield Woman’s Club will have just the break you need: it’s “Taste of the Holidays” cooking contest and luncheon. Set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the St. Joseph Parish Hall, admission will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.
Cooks can vie for bragging rights in meats, main dishes, vegetables, breads, salads, cakes, pies, candies, desserts and miscellaneous. Entries can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with judging from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
From 1 to 3 p.m. the Grayson County Library will host its annual “Kiddie Christmas,” with a variety of activities for the younger set. At the nearby Jack Thomas House, the Grayson County Historical Society will hold a holiday open house from 2 to 5 p.m.
Throughout the day the Leitchfield United Methodist Church will be giving kids from less financially fortunate homes a chance to “shop” for gifts for their families through the church’s Thrift Shop ministry.
Now in its ninth year, the program allows kids to select presents for their loved ones at no cost.
Children are qualified to participate through the Grayson County School District’s Family Resource Center and through participation in Head Start, explained volunteer Pat Wagoner, who helps organize the program.
At 5 p.m., the lighted parade will step off from the Grayson County Fairgrounds, heading south along Main Street and around the Public Square. Besides the glowing floats, costumed characters from Charles Dickens’ classic novels will be parading down Main Street and around the square.
