A large crowd of family and well-wishers from around Grayson County were on hand Wednesday evening at Cougar Gym to give a rousing sendoff to the cheerleading squads from both the middle school and the high school.

Both squads were scheduled to leave Thursday afternoon for the long journey to Orlando, Florida, where they will be competing in the Universal Cheerleading Association’s National Cheerleading Championships. The competition is being held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort on Saturday and Sunday, February 8 & 9.

Grayson County Schools Superintendent Barry Anderson, GCHS Principal Todd Johnston, high school Resource Officer Norman Chaffins and former cheerleader Shirley Beatty all spoke to the participants, telling them how proud the community was of their efforts and telling them to enjoy this moment as it will be something they will remember for the rest of their lives.

All the squad members were individually introduced to the crowd, along with their coaches, Tina Poindexter and Jenny Payne from the middle school, and Erica and Jonathan Devore from the high school. The squads then performed their two-and-a-half minute, high-energy routines.

Following the programs, the squads and their families formed a prayer circle on the floor while local ministers prayed for their safety during their trip and for their performances in Florida.
