After dropping their first two games in the earlier rounds of the Farmer’s Bank Christmas Tournament, at Breckinridge County, the Cougars faced Louisville Moore in the consolation game last Monday afternoon.

The Mustangs had also lost their first two games and came into this game at 0-6, though the majority of their games had been close.

This game was close for most of the first half, but a late Moore run at the end of the second period put them in front to stay as they dropped the Cougars to 1-7 on the season with a 77-62 win.

After falling behind 5-0 at the start, the Cougars were able to come back to tie the score twice, the last time at 9-9 on a Bret Johnston lay-up at the 3:49 mark. The Mustangs took a three-point, 20-17 lead into the second period.

An old-fashioned three-point play by the Cougars’ Alex Shellhart with 2:23 left in the first half brought the Cougars to within two points of the lead, 31-29, but the Mustangs reeled off eight unanswered points to take a 10-point advantage, 39-29 with 1:17 left. Grayson County trailed by eight points, 41-33 at the half.

When the Mustangs opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run, they held a 15-point lead, 50-35 at the 4:31 mark. Grayson County then went on a 15-3 run, capped off by a Tanner Tyra three with 1:28 left, to close back to within three points, 53-50.

Moore responded by scoring the last six points of the third quarter and the first four of the final period to go back on top by 13 points, 63-50 with 7:18 left to play. The Cougars were able to get within eight points, 68-60 with 2:50 left, but the Mustangs iced the game by scoring seven straight to take a 15 point lead with a little over a minute left.

The Mustangs put three players into double figures, led by Trey Drake’s 24 points. Justin Richardson had 14 points, while Pablo Garcia added 10.

Talon Gary led all scorers in the game with 26 points and he also led the Cougars with six rebounds and three steals. Alex Shellhart joined Gary in double figures with 18 points and he added four rebounds.

Cole Akridge scored seven points and had four rebounds, and Colton Williams had four points. Tyra finished with three points, while Johnston and Zac Williams had two apiece.
