I think I can safely speak for everyone in Kentucky when I say, “Brrrr….”

The roller coaster of cold to extremely cold to mind-numbingly cold and back seems to have even the winter weather lovers shivering in their boots and telling spring to hurry up.

A life-long antagonist of all things cold, I’ve been particularly grouchy - er, I mean, disconcerted - over the cold snap.

In addition to idle threats of moving to Florida, I’ve been attempting to console myself by abducting my co-worker’s space heater, demanding a recount when listening to the weather forecast, and refusing to go outdoors unless absolutely necessary.

Today I decided, however, that if I can’t beat the cold, I’ll at least try to find some reasons to appreciate it just a little by researching the benefits of a frigid climate. Here’s what I found:

- Cold weather might increase your lifespan. Studies are showing that some animals live longer when they’re forced to do so in colder temps, and researchers believe humans might experience the same life-lengthening affect. So the next time I want to curse the cold, I’m going to remind myself that maybe today’s frostiness will mean a lengthier retirement on a warm beach somewhere when I’m old.

- Studies revealed that during nasty winter weather, people have longer phone conversations with family and friends. I can’t think of a nicer way to avoid making that freezing cold trip to the grocery store than by having a warm and fuzzy chat with a friend.

- Frigid temperatures can reduce inflammation and pain, much like putting ice on an injury, so that sub-zero sprint from the gym to my car in workout shorts just might be doing my achy knees a favor after all.

- Research reported in Psychology Today showed that it takes some yucky weather to keep people truly appreciating the warm, sunny days when they finally do arrive. I think they’re right, because I’m sure that I’m not alone in counting down the days until spring (it’s 54, in case you were wondering), and I’m certain that I’ll appreciate the heck out of it when it gets here!
