The American Legion Post 213 and VFW Post 3852 will host a veteran benefits seminar on Friday, April 18.
The seminar will be held at the VFW post, located at 166 VFW Road in Falls of Rough, from 12p.m. to 5 p.m. and feature representatives from a number of local organizations who will provide assistance to veterans and information about services available to them.
The free seminar, organized by Adjutant Legion Commander John Barton, will also serve as a prerequisite for the Department of Statewide Service Officer training, which will be held the following day at Rough River Lodge.
The seminar on Friday is open to all veterans in Grayson, Ohio, and Breckinridge counties, and the Saturday training will be for all Kentucky American Legion service officers.
“It’s a huge event,” said American Legion Area B Commander Jim Lish. “…We want to let the vets know in Grayson County we’re here for you.”
Individuals from Veterans Affairs will be in attendance during the seminar to offer information regarding healthcare, enrollment, and suicide prevention.
Representatives from Kentucky Career Center will offer assistance with job placement and training.
Representatives from Veterans Upward Bound, which is affiliated with Western Kentucky University, will offer information regarding education benefits.
Representatives from The Cecilian Bank will offer assistance with registering for VA home loans.
“VA home loans are easier than a lot of people think,” Lish said.
Service officers from across the state of Kentucky will help file claims, appeals, search for military records, and aid with memorial and burial services.
Service officers will also be able to replace veterans’ medals if they have been lost, said Lish.
In addition, representatives from Warrior Transition Association, located in Fort Knox, are also scheduled to attend.
From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., individuals from the various organizations in attendance will speak, and the event will close with a dance from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.
