To the Editor:
I would like to commend The News-Gazette for posting the prom picture of the two guys holding hands on Facebook. Despite the possibility of losing subscribers, the paper decided to make a political statement that needed to be made. There are many LGBTQ teens in this community who are afraid to be themselves because of the hurtful comments and reactions from members of the community. By posting the picture they were able to see that there are numerous people who support them and are willing to stick up for their rights. It’s disheartening to see people say that they have the freedom to say hate speech, but yet they want to take away the rights and freedoms of homosexuals. That’s not how this country works, and it’s time that people learn to accept that. People can think that it’s immoral all that they want, but not everyone holds the same religious beliefs, so what’s immoral to them isn’t to someone else. You can’t control others’ lives based on your own beliefs. There are freedoms in this country for a reason, and that reason isn’t to take away other’s freedoms. It’s great to see that the younger generation is moving more towards acceptance of all people, because that is how you make a community better. If people can’t feel safe for loving a certain person or holding certain beliefs than something is seriously wrong. Thank you, News-Gazette for showing acceptance! You have gained even more respect from much of the community.
