The time of year has finally arrived for the hotly-anticipated Rotary Club Auction, which airs live on local radio station K105 from the basement of Wilson & Muir Bank in Leitchfield.

The community-service club raises funds through the annual auction for their scholarships and no-interest student loans, which help local students attend college.

Current club president Bill Oldham said that the auction, which began Tuesday, will continue live from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday evening, April 16 and 17.

A list of available items can be found on the group’s website at www.graysoncountyrotary.org.

The big-ticket item this year is a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, donated by Dan Power’s dealership. Other popular items include NASCAR tickets, children’s bicycles, Case pocket knives and lots of furniture, Oldham said.

“Another thing that people go crazy over,” Oldham said, “is 18 tons of crushed stone from Scotty’s Contracting and Stone.” He said that this is auctioned each year, and “we always get a lot of people bidding on that one.”

In addition to the usual fun, the group is also hosting a Candidate Chili Cook-off this year, during which local political candidates enter their dishes into the race to be named the best chili in town.

For $5 per person, everyone is invited to stop by and taste the variety of chili recipes and vote for their favorite. The cook-off will be a three-night event, coinciding with the auction, and the final winner will be announced on Thursday evening.

Proceeds from the entire event go toward three annual scholarships of $1,000 each, including the Jodi Hall Memorial Music Scholarship, a vocational scholarship, and a scholarship for a student planning to attend Elizabethtown Technical and Community College.

Additionally, there are dozens of students benefiting from the club’s no-interest student loans, which are paid back upon completion of the student’s academic program.
