The Grayson County High School Co-Ed Cheerleaders became the first Cheer team in GCHS history to compete in National Competition this past weekend.
The GCHS Cheer Team competed in Regional competition in Nov. 2013 to qualify for the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship, held this past weekend (Saturday, Feb. 8) at the Walt Disney World ESPN Complex in Orlando, Florida.
“It’s the most prestigious cheerleading championship in the country,” said GCHS Cheer Coach Erika DeVore.
The team arrived in Orlando on Saturday and competed in the semi-final competition that same day.
The GCHS Cheer Team ranked 9th out of 34 teams in the semi-finals and qualified for the finals, in which they ranked 12th, DeVore said.
600 teams competed in the National Competition, and only three Kentucky teams, including GCHS, competed in the finals, said DeVore.
On the GCHS Cheer Team’s success, DeVore said, “It is awesome. I’m so proud of them and their work ethic.”
“Since I started coaching…this is the moment I’ve been working toward,” she went on to say. “It took nine years, but that’s what building a program is about.”
DeVore said she and the Cheer team are thankful for the support of the community, the parents, and the fundraising efforts.
“We couldn’t go without [their support],” she said.
The UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship, including the GCHS Cheer Team’s performance, will air on ESPN on March 22 and 23, DeVore said.
