The 2014 Relay for Life of Grayson County Chili Kick-off was held on Monday, October 28.
The annual event serves to officially kick-start the new year’s Relay for Life event in Grayson County.
The Kick-off, held at the Centre on Main in Leitchfield, featured a chili cook-off, a number of guest speakers, and a luminaria ceremony, during which attendees turned the lights out and lit candles in memory or honor of loved ones stricken with cancer.
GC Relay for Life Event Chair Rose Mary Goins, who provided the welcome and opening address, said Relay for Life teams who attended and registered during the kick-off received half-priced registration, as well.
In a separate interview, Goins, who was diagnosed with cancer five years ago, said of the Relay, “This is my heart and my passion…It’s a very good cause.”
Goins said many people don’t realize that the money raised from the Relay for Life helps fund services for cancer patients that the American Cancer Society provides, as well as cancer research.
Lifelong Clarkson resident and cancer survivor Bill Skaggs was the featured guest speaker for the 2014 Kick-off and discussed his experience with cancer.
Skaggs said his doctor discovered his cancer was discovered in 2000, and on March 6 of that year, he underwent operation to remove the cancer.
Following his surgery, Skaggs said he took chemotherapy for six months, and in the more than ten years that have passed since that time, he has been declared cancer-free.
After Skaggs’ speech, Goins addressed those in attendance, and said of individuals facing cancer, “It’s all the same journey. It’s all the same drive. We want to survive.”
Judges for the 2014 Chili Cook-off were Sonny Graybeal, Carol Meriwether, Wayne Meriwether, and Sherry Weedman.
This year’s Chili Cook-off winners were 1st Place, Lois Mattingly, with the Carrol Family Relay Team; 2nd Place, the Leggett and Platt Relay Team; and 3rd Place, Pearlie Mae York, with the IGA Team.
