Saturday, May 24, 2014 family and friends celebrated the 90th birthday of Julius “Doc” Lucas at the High Plains Community Center in High Plains, KY.

Family members reflected on the positive influence of Uncle Doc on their lives, presented him with gifts and a birthday cake.

Commander Jason Webb, US Navy, was present for the event during the Memorial Day weekend and discussed the wars the US has fought for its freedom and discussed the long history and tradition of the Lucas family in military service in defense of their nation.

In particular, Commander Webb talked about the World War II military service of Doc Lucas and his brother, Harold Lucas, in the US Navy and the Army service of their brother, Walter Lucas, during the same war.

Much of the discussion focused on the service of Doc Lucas on board the aircraft carrier USS ESSEX (CV 9).

On behalf of the US Navy and a grateful nation, Commander Webb presented Doc Lucas with several items of recognition for his military service, and thanked the Lucas family for their commendable service to their country.
