The County’s plans to further develop the wooded area located between the new Judicial Center and South Clinton Street in Leitchfield, have expanded to include a repurposed steel bridge which will be brought in from Coon Hollow Road near Caneyville.

Judge Executive Gary Logsdon announced that a now-defunct one-lane steel bridge which has already been replaced over Coon Hollow Road will soon be moved and revamped to create a walking bridge over the creek near the new walking trail and skate park in the Big Spring Valley area.

Logsdon said that the County Road Crew has removed the wooden decking on the old bridge and will soon be using a crane to lift the bridge so that five axles can be placed underneath it. A tongue will be welded to the bridge for transport.

The 84 feet long by 16 feet wide bridge will be transported on county and city roadways from Coon Hollow Road to the park area near the Judicial Center on Carroll Gibson Boulevard before being set into place with a crane.

New wooden decking will be placed over the bridge, will be used for foot traffic. The bridge will no longer be suitable for vehicles to cross.

The bridge’s placement will allow those using the walking trail to access both sides of the creek and use more of the space available for recreation.

Logsdon explained that while the crane is available, it will also be used to set up concrete elements for the skate park.

Additionally, an ampitheatre will be erected near the new footbridge to create an area which could be used for musical and other performances.

Logsdon said that he and the county’s magistrates are working diligently to accomplish the upgrades before spring.
